We begin our journey at 08:30 AM, departing from the parking area at Ušće near Branko’s Bridge, across from the skate park. Our route takes us along the international E-75 highway until we exit towards Požarevac. As we drive through the serene landscapes, we’ll soon see the Danube River, appearing quite different from how we know it in the city.
Upon entering the Djerdap Gorge, you’ll feel like you’re by the sea as the Danube here is an impressive 6.5 kilometers wide! This is the beginning of our exploration of one of Europe’s most magnificent natural wonders. Not far from the modern town of Golubac stands the historic Golubac Fortress, our first major stop.
The Golubac Fortress, built on the site of a former Roman frontier fort, first appeared in records in the mid-14th century. Although it remains uncertain whether the Serbs or Hungarians built it, this fortress played a crucial strategic role. Located at the entrance to the Djerdap Gorge, it was designed to control the merchant ships traveling along the Danube, a vital trade route throughout history. Today, the fortress boasts ten powerful defensive towers, offering a glimpse into its storied past.
After touring the fortress, we continue through the Djerdap National Park, where pristine nature and breathtaking views abound. After half an hour’s drive, we reach a vantage point opposite the striking Treskavac Rock. According to some researchers, this rock played a pivotal role in the settlement of hunter-gatherers at Lepenski Vir, due to its advantageous natural resources, such as water and fishing spots.
We then visit Lepenski Vir, a site of monumental importance, believed to be the first permanent settlement in Europe. Here, you can see trapezoidal houses with hearths, offering unique insights into the domestic organization of Mesolithic people. Archaeological findings suggest that the inhabitants domesticated dogs, aiding them in hunting. Among the relics are religious artifacts and sculptures, such as the famous “Adam,” “Danubius,” and “Praroditeljka” (Ancestor), which reflect the complex spiritual and cosmological beliefs of these ancient people.
As we explore Lepenski Vir, we encounter various artifacts that speak to the daily lives and spiritual practices of its inhabitants. The fish-shaped faces and realistic human heads carved into stone showcase the artistic and religious sophistication of this ancient community. The unique burial practices, with revered members interred beneath the floors of their homes, highlight their respect and reverence for the deceased.
Following our visit to Lepenski Vir, we head to Kapetan Mišin Breg, offering stunning views of the Danube and surrounding mountains. Here, we take a break for lunch, providing an opportunity to relax and enjoy the picturesque landscape. The restaurants in this area serve delicious local cuisine, with specialties that highlight the flavors of the region.
After a leisurely lunch and some free time to explore, we begin our return journey to Belgrade, retracing our route through the scenic landscapes we traveled earlier. We aim to arrive back in the city in the early evening, concluding our enriching tour of East Serbia.
