Sirmium, now known as Sremska Mitrovica, was once a thriving Roman city and one of the capitals of the Roman Empire. Known for its beauty, it was considered the most splendid Roman city until its destruction by the Avars in the early 6th century. The significance of Sirmium is underscored by the fact that it was the birthplace of seven Roman emperors, highlighting its prominence in the early Christian era.
The city was later renamed Mitrovica in honor of Saint Demetrius, the Christian martyr and protector of the city. Today, visitors can explore archaeological remains including the imperial palace, thermal baths, granaries, and early Christian churches. Nearby, the natural reserve Zasavica offers a pristine environment famous for its biodiversity, where visitors can enjoy serene boat rides and observe protected wildlife.
Our one-day Sirmium excursion starts in front your accommodation at 09:00 and promises an enriching cultural and natural experience. The first stop is in Pećinci to visit the unique Bread Museum, established by artist Jeremija through years of collecting and research. This museum, nominated for the European Museum of the Year in 2017, celebrates bread’s vital role in human nutrition and its sacramental significance in Christianity, particularly among Serbs.
The journey continues to the Special Nature Reserve Zasavica, one of the last preserved wetlands in the region, teeming with rich flora and fauna. A boat trip through its marshy channels offers a chance to see rare species in their natural habitat and purchase local products made in the reserve. After exploring Zasavica’s tranquil beauty, we proceed to Sremska Mitrovica, the ancient city of Sirmium, which the Romans transformed into a significant cultural and administrative center during the reign of Emperor Tiberius at the turn of the era.
Sirmium reached its zenith during the reign of Emperor Galerius in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries as a capital of the Roman Empire. Archaeological digs have revealed the grandeur of the city, including an imperial palace attributed to Emperor Maximian Hercules with over 350 m2 of preserved mosaics. These excavations have also uncovered remnants of a hippodrome, believed to be the first in the region, underscoring the city’s ancient prestige.
Our tour will include a visit to the city museum, which houses the largest collection of valuable archaeological finds, including numerous marble statues that have withstood wars and destruction over two millennia. After touring the museum, guests will have free time for lunch before we return to Belgrade.
