The Gradac River Gorge is one of Serbia’s most stunning natural treasures, known for its crystal-clear waters, numerous springs, and the breathtaking beauty that surrounds it, making it a true gem of the Valjevo area. This tour not only offers a chance to enjoy these splendid natural scenes but also includes visits to two significant monasteries, Lelić and Ćelije. These monasteries house the relics of two of the greatest Serbian saints of the last century—Saint Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović at Lelić and Abbot Justin Popović at Ćelije. We will explore the intriguing histories of these spiritual centers and their revered figures.Nature sightseeing Gradac bigtours

Our day trip begins at 8:00 AM from Belgrade, departing from your accommodation or from the parking lot in front of the Museum of Yugoslavia (25th May – House of Flowers). We will travel towards Valjevo, and before reaching our first destination, we will stop for coffee and breakfast in Valjevo. After the break, we proceed to the village and monastery of Lelić, which was founded by Saint Bishop Nikolaj. The church, constructed and painted in the 1930s, houses the relics of Bishop Nikolaj, which were transferred from America to his foundation in 1991.

The Lelić Monastery has become a pilgrimage site since the relics’ arrival. The church’s architecture includes innovative designs on a traditional Moravian style base. From here, we embark on a walking tour towards the Strong Spring of the Gradac River. The path leads through Lelić village to a clearing where the gorge begins. The hiking trail takes us to the Eco Camp where we can revel in the natural beauty and walk along the Gradac River. After a short break, we will continue upstream to the Strong Spring, which accounts for a third of the Gradac River’s flow, followed by a downstream walk to a large meadow—a perfect spot for relaxation.

After resting, we head to the ethno household “Skok po Skok” for a lunch break. The restaurant specializes in grilled trout, although other dishes of the national cuisine are also superb. Here, you’ll dine in a beautiful setting overlooking the Gradac River. Post-lunch, we move to the Ćelije Monastery, just a ten-minute walk from the river. Built in the Middle Ages, possibly during the reign of King Dragutin, the monastery grounds are the final resting place for several Serbian leaders from the Valjevo area. Near the church dedicated to the Synaxis of the Archangels is the grave of Birčanin Ilija, a notable figure whose death precipitated the First Serbian Uprising led by Karađorđe.

Our tour then leads us back to our bus, which awaits us up a staircase of 963 steps. This climb is the tour’s most challenging part and is lined with benches for rest. We recommend that those with severe heart conditions avoid this part of the tour. The rest of the journey is less strenuous and ends with a return drive through Valjevo and Lajkovac, rejoining the highway to Belgrade. We expect to arrive back in the capital in the evening. This tour offers a profound connection with the rich historical and natural heritage of the region, ensuring an enriching experience.Celije monastery trip bigtours
