Southeastern Serbia is known for its stunning natural landscapes and significant historical sites. Among its many attractions, Resavska Cave stands out as a geological wonder. Estimated to be 80 million years old, this cave is celebrated for its breathtaking formations and is a popular destination for visitors. Just a short drive from the cave is the magnificent Veliki Buk waterfall, locally known as Lisine. Standing 25 meters high, this waterfall was once considered the tallest in Serbia until the discovery of waterfalls on Stara Planina. The area around Veliki Buk is perfect for nature walks, complemented by local restaurants that serve regional specialties, including the famous river trout.
Our journey begins at 9:00 AM from the parking area next to the Museum of Yugoslavia. After a scenic two-hour drive, we arrive at Resavska Cave. Visitors will walk through an 800-meter-long path inside the cave, marveling at its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The cave not only offers natural beauty but also a glimpse into prehistoric times with artifacts found within its depths.
Next, we head to the Veliki Buk waterfall. This natural attraction offers a serene escape from daily life, with the sound of cascading water providing a soothing ambiance. The area is ideal for a leisurely walk, and several nearby restaurants offer the chance to taste traditional Serbian cuisine. The local river trout is a must-try delicacy, known for its fresh and unique flavor.
Continuing our tour, we visit the Ravanica Monastery, the first church built in the Morava architectural style. Commissioned by Prince Lazar in the late 14th century, Ravanica is a significant historical site, known for its colorful structures and intricate rosettes. Guests can explore the monastery and admire the well-preserved frescoes that depict stories from the past.
Our next stop is the Manasija Monastery, also known as Resava. Founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević in the early 15th century, Manasija is encircled by strong fortifications that protected it during turbulent times. The remaining frescoes on the pillars and western wall are masterpieces of 15th-century art, showcasing the skill of medieval Serbian artists. At Manasija, we delve into the legacy of Despot Stefan Lazarević and the monastery’s historical significance.
