Our adventure begins with a drive along the highway until we turn towards Valjevo, from where we continue on a local road through the stunning Valjevo mountains. The breathtaking views from these heights are just a preview of the natural beauty that awaits us. Our first stop is at the “Gate of Podrinje,” a perfect spot for a quick photo break, before we soon reach the mighty green Drina River, the lifeline of this region.

The House on the Drina, near Bajina Bašta, is a symbol of resilience and tradition. Originally built over half a century ago, it has been swept away by the river’s powerful currents numerous times, only to be rebuilt by the local youth of Bajina Bašta each time. The current house, constructed in 2011, stands defiantly against the river’s high waters. This quaint structure was a retreat for young men and women seeking a peaceful escape from parental oversight and prying neighbors. Its global fame was cemented in 2013 when it won a National Geographic photo competition.

Our next destination is Mokra Gora, home to the famed Šargan Eight railway. This narrow-gauge railway, originally constructed by Austro-Hungarian authorities between 1902 and 1906, has been meticulously restored. Since 2003, a 15.5 km stretch of the railway allows passengers to travel from Mokra Gora to Šargan Vitasi and back. The train journey, winding through 22 tunnels (the longest dedicated to King Alexander I), offers stunning views and a unique glimpse into the past as it ascends 300 meters in a figure-eight pattern.

After our memorable train ride, we head to the nearby ethno village of Mećavnik-Drvengrad. This magical place, perched at 680 meters above sea level and surrounded by even higher mountains, was originally built for the film “Life Is a Miracle.” Today, it is a modern ethno-tourism complex. As we stroll through Drvengrad, we’ll see the church dedicated to St. Sava, the Mećavnik hotel, a library, a cinema, a swimming pool, and a restaurant serving traditional Serbian cuisine. Each street and square in Drvengrad is named after famous Serbian writers, poets, directors, and athletes.
