Medieval Capital „Ras“ and gorgeous ortodox frescoes

Join us on a journey to the heart of Serbia’s medieval heritage with our one-day tour to Stari Ras, the historical epicenter of the early Serbian medieval state. This tour offers an unparalleled glimpse into the rich history and spiritual depth of the area, including visits to the fortress of Stari Ras, the Episcopalian Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and the renowned monasteries of Sopoćani and Đurđevi Stupovi.

Our journey begins early at 07:30 from the parking lot in front of the Museum of Yugoslavia or in front of the your accommodation. Traveling via the motorway to Čačak and then along the scenic Ibar motorway to Novi Pazar, we approach the remnants of the medieval city of Ras, once the flourishing capital of the Serbian medieval state. Here, at this crossroads of Eastern and Western influences, you will step back in time to when Ras was a bustling hub of political, economic, and cultural activity under the Nemanjić dynasty.

Upon arrival, our first stop is the fortress itself, located at the Gradina site above the market area of Stari Trg. The importance of Ras during the late 12th and early 13th centuries as the capital of the Serbian state will be highlighted, alongside its strategic role in various historical epochs. The fortress, with its ancient foundations stretching back to Roman times and even the Bronze Age, tells a story of continuous human settlement and fortification.

Next, we ascend towards the Sopoćani Monastery, established by King Uroš I of Serbia in honor of the Holy Trinity. Nestled above the source of the Raška River, this monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its breathtaking Byzantine frescoes, particularly the depiction of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, which historians herald as a precursor to the Renaissance in fresco technique.

Our path then leads us to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, known as Petrova Crkva, Serbia’s oldest active church. With foundations dating back to the 4th century, the current rotunda-shaped structure was predominantly constructed in the 9th century. This church, a significant site for the baptism and monastic transformation of Stefan Nemanja, holds relics and frescoes spanning from the 10th to the 12th centuries.

Lunch offers a flavorful pause in Novi Pazar, where the blend of oriental culture enriches the experience. You’ll have the opportunity to savor local specialties like grilled coffee and Pazarski ćevapi. This gastronomic interlude also provides a moment to reflect on the cultural amalgamation present in this historically rich city.

Rejuvenated, we continue to the monastery of Đurđevi Stupovi, founded by Stefan Nemanja as a token of gratitude to Saint George, who, according to legend, aided Nemanja during his imprisonment. Perched majestically above Novi Pazar, this site offers spectacular views and a profound sense of peace, symbolizing the celestial aspirations of the Nemanjić dynasty.

As the day concludes, we journey back to Belgrade, arriving in the late evening filled with memories of Serbia’s majestic past and its enduring spiritual legacy.
