Resava Cave & medieval monasteries

Southeastern Serbia is a region celebrated for its striking natural landscapes and historical significance. Among its many treasures, Resavska Cave stands out as a preeminent attraction.

Estimated to be 80 million years old, this cave is one of Serbia’s most beautiful and frequently visited geological formations. Located just a half-hour drive from the cave is the Veliki Buk waterfall, known locally as Lisine. This magnificent waterfall has a drop of 25 meters and was once considered the tallest in Serbia until the discovery of those on Stara Planina. The area is an ideal spot for nature walks and is complemented by several restaurants where visitors can indulge in local cuisine, including the regional specialty, river trout.

This Serbian region is not only known for its natural beauty but also for its rich tapestry of cultural and historical monuments, including several significant monasteries. During this tour, we will visit Ravanica Monastery, known as the first church constructed in the distinctive Morava architectural style. Commissioned by Prince Lazar in the late 14th century, just before the Battle of Kosovo,

Ravanica Monastery is considered the originator of the Morava school of architecture. The monastery is renowned for its polychromatic structures and the intricate rosettes that adorn its five-domed church.

Another key destination on our itinerary is Manasija Monastery, also known as Resava. Founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević, the son of Prince Lazar, in the early 15th century, Manasija is a significant cultural and historical site. Although a large portion of the frescoes has been lost over time, the remaining frescoes on the pillars and the western wall are undoubted masterpieces of 15th-century art, showcasing the heights of medieval Serbian craftsmanship.

Our journey begins early at 8:00 AM from the parking area next to the Museum of Yugoslavia, also known as the House of Flowers. After a two-hour drive, our first stop will be Ravanica Monastery. Here, guests will have the opportunity to explore the foundational site of the Morava architectural style and view the beautifully preserved frescoes that narrate tales from centuries past.

Following our visit to Ravanica, we will proceed to the enchanting surroundings of the Veliki Buk waterfall. This area offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with the waterfall’s powerful roar providing a natural soundtrack. Nearby, several restaurants offer the chance to taste authentic national dishes, particularly the locally famed river trout, which is a must-try for culinary enthusiasts.

Next, we will venture to Resavska Cave, where visitors can walk through an 800-meter-long arranged path to explore its vast chambers adorned with spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. This cave serves not only as a natural wonder but also as a historical artifact, providing insights into the prehistoric human occupation evident from the tools and artifacts found within.

The tour will conclude with a visit to Manasija Monastery, encircled by robust fortifications built to withstand the tumultuous periods of its history. Here, we will delve into the legacy of Despot Stefan Lazarević and the monastery’s role as a spiritual and cultural beacon during medieval times. After exploring Manasija, we will enjoy a leisurely lunch in the serene setting of the surrounding area before returning to Belgrade in the evening.
