The Banat region, a geographical area divided between Romania, Serbia, and Hungary, boasts a rich tapestry of cultural and historical landmarks, with Vršac as its principal city in the Serbian portion. This region, integrated into Serbia after World War I thanks to the efforts of the esteemed Serbian scientist Mihajlo Pupin, offers a blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. The highest point in Banat and Vojvodina is found in the Vršac Mountains at Gudurički peak, standing at 641 meters.
On the southern slopes of these mountains lies the medieval Monastery of Mesić, established by the Branković brothers, the last descendants of Serbian medieval rulers. On the opposite side, the Monastery of Malo Središte, also a legacy of Serbia’s last despots, promises a historical journey back to the 15th century. Overlooking the city of Vršac is the Vršac Tower, a sentinel structure built after the fall of Smederevo to safeguard against future Ottoman incursions.
Our one-day Vrsac & the Lonely Mountain Tour departs from Belgrade at 08:00 from the parking lot in front of the Museum of Yugoslavia (May 25th Museum – House of Flowers). We journey to the heart of our Banat to the medieval Monastery of Mesić, a spiritual haven established in the 15th century as Serbians gradually migrated northward from the south. The current church stands on the foundations of a much larger trefoil church, repeatedly restored after destructions by the Ottomans but continuously revived by the faithful as a pivotal gathering place.
From Monastery Mesić, we proceed to the Vršac Tower, where panoramic views of the city and much of our Banat await. First mentioned in Hungarian documents in the early 15th century, this fully restored Donjon Tower is surrounded by the ruins of a palace, a cistern, and defensive walls, offering a glimpse into the area’s feudal past.
Our final stop is the city of Vršac itself, where we will explore a plethora of landmarks during a walking tour. Highlights include Teodosije Vršački Square, the Pharmacy on the Steps, the Cathedral of Saint Father Nicholas, the Bishop’s Palace, the City Hall, and the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Gerhard. After the tour, you will have some free time for lunch and individual exploration.
In the evening, we plan to return to Belgrade, concluding a day full of historical insights and breathtaking views. Join us to discover the rich history and vibrant cultural tapestry of Banat and its monumental fortresses.
