Lazarev Canyon – The Hidden Gem of Eastern Serbia – Discover the Most Mysterious Canyon in Serbia
Looking for an adventure in the heart of Eastern Serbia? Lazarev Canyon (often called the “Serbian Colorado”) is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the country. Located near the village of Zlot, between the municipalities of Bor and Boljevac, this dramatic limestone gorge is a must-see destination for hikers, cavers, and nature lovers.
The canyon stretches 9 km in length, with cliffs rising 350–500 meters high, and in some places it narrows to just 7 meters wide. Carved by four rivers (the most famous being the Lazareva River), it covers an area of 17.55 km² and hides dozens of caves and pits – around 70 caves have been explored so far, including the legendary Lazareva Cave, the longest cave in Serbia.
Explore Lazareva Cave – The Longest Cave in Serbia

One of the highlights of Lazarev Canyon is Lazareva Cave, perched 7 meters above the Lazareva River. More than 16 km of passages have been explored, making it a fascinating destination for speleology and cave tours in Serbia.
Inside the cave, you’ll find impressive halls such as the Throne Hall, the Concert Hall, and the Bat Hall. An underground lake, 17 meters long and up to 3 meters deep, adds to the magic.
Lazareva Cave is also home to 24 species of bats, making it one of the most important bat habitats in the Balkans. The famous Serbian geographer Jovan Cvijić documented its rich biodiversity as early as the 19th century.
Flora and Fauna of Lazarev Canyon

Lazarev Canyon is not only a geological wonder but also a biodiversity hotspot. With over 700 plant species (around 20% of all flora in Serbia), it’s a paradise for botany and nature tourism. Rare and endemic plants like the Crimean pine, Serbian ramonda, and yew trees thrive here.
The canyon also shelters impressive wildlife:
- 🐐 Chamois – rarely seen in Serbia, but present on the cliffs of Lazarev Canyon.
- 🦅 Golden eagle, peregrine falcon, and tawny owl – perfect for birdwatching tours.
- 🐍 Horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) – Lazarev Canyon is the largest habitat of this species in Europe.
With 26 forest communities and 20 meadow ecosystems, the canyon offers a true encounter with unspoiled wilderness.
