Uvac River Gorge

In the heart of Serbia, where nature hides its greatest wonders, the Uvac river offers an unforgettable spectacle that takes your breath away.

Uvac River – the most important information

The special nature reserve Uvac is located in the territories of the municipalities of Nova Varoš and Sjenica. This canyon of incredible beauty includes the river Uvac – the main tributary of Lim, as well as three artificial reservoir lakes: Uvačko, Zlatarsko and Radoinjsko. These three artificial lakes were created as a result of the construction of dams necessary for the functioning of the Uvac and Kokin Brod hydroelectric plants, and forever changed the appearance of this region.

The territory around the Uvac River received the status of “Special Nature Reserve” in 1971, thanks to the unique plant and animal species that can be found here. And if you have not already visited this area of exceptional beauty, here are a few additional reasons why you should not miss visiting the Uvac canyon.

What not to miss

Due to its natural beauty and tourist attractions, the entire area of the Uvac valley has been placed under the protection of the Special Nature Reserve “Uvac”. Thus, all lakes, caves, flora and fauna are protected by law and have been cherished since then as natural monuments of great importance.

In this regard, the Special Nature Reserve has become home to: Griffon vulture – a rare species of vulture that is considered the king of the sky and the cleaner of nature. The vulture is the largest bird in Serbia, with a wingspan of 2.5 m, and you can often see it cruising the sky above the Uvac river canyon.

Apart from these attractions, you can try your hand at water sports and other activities, such as:

Fishing, Rafting, Swimming, Walking and jogging, Mountaineering and Cycling.

Did you know that the Uvac river in Serbia is about 80 kilometers long, and a cruise on the Uvac usually lasts from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the route and the place from which it departs. Boat trips through the meander of river Uvac are most popular. The depth of the river Uvac varies along its course, in some places, the depth can reach up to 30 meters.

In the fast parts of the river, the depth is less, but the river generally has enough depth for safe cruising. The water of the Uvac river is usually clean and bright green, especially in the areas around the lake and canyon. In some places, the river has a characteristic blue-green color, which is the result of rich vegetation and the presence of minerals in the water.

Going out to the Molitva viewpoint – Many people decide to go on a trip to the Uvac River Canyon after they see a magnificent view of the meanders on some nice photos! This unrepeatable scene can be seen from the Molitva viewpoint, which is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Serbia.

We reach the most picturesque place that made the Uvac canyon famous. Location of view point is not far away from the parking. Next to the parking, there is a village farm offering local products (cheese, honey, teas).
